The main reason to keep a nitrogen generator on-site at any mining site is for fire suppression. Coal mine fires are a nightmare for ecological and economic reasons. In fact, some coal mine fires cost companies as much as $2 million a day. Fires can be easily extinguished with nitrogen.

By displacing oxygen within the mine, the fire no longer burns. However, depending on the size of the fire, the process of continuously injecting nitrogen can take days, weeks or even months. Nitrogen for inert waste areas

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that all sealed areas of mines be kept inert or chemically inert to prevent any explosions in these areas. Another option is to use a high-pressure seal. Nitrogen is used to displace oxygen until the oxygen content in the air is less than 10%. As atmospheric conditions change, the air in many underground areas also changes, causing oxygen levels to increase. This may require continuous injection of nitrogen.
